Eglegem lake
Hombeek
The area is an important resting place for birds, especially in winter. An ideal destination for bird lovers! For sports enthusiasts, you can hike, bike, fish, surf or sail. Also very nice to visit one of the terraces overlooking this beautiful domain in summer.
The Zenne
Hombeek
In Hombeek you can take a beautiful walk on the Zenne dike. The Zenne is a tidal-bound freshwater river like the Nete, Rupel and Dijle. Two-day this river is under the influence of ebb and flow. This tidal action creates a distinct and extremely rare biotope: freshwater mudflats and salt marshes, not permanently submerged, sheltered and therefore muddy environments.
Expoel castle
Hombeek
The magnificent 13th-century Castle Expoel owes its name to Jan de Axpole, husband of its first known owner, Catherine Raduwaerts. Others claim that the castle possibly owes its name to an evil spirit or witch who lived here in a pool. Since 1700, the castle was the summer retreat of Balthazar IV Moretus, heir to the Plantijn printing and publishing house in Antwerp and Grand Master of Antwerp. After his death, the castle was sold to the de Meester de Ravestein family.
